Crazy

I must be either crazy or dumb.  I have reached that conclusion thanks to the lack of interest in people joining me for a month by taking the SMC-Mini-Challenge. I've been at it for 82 days now and even though I do find it very difficult to come up with creative 1-off outfits every day, I'm actually enjoying it, so I'm wondering what scares everyone off. Could it be the daily photos? The creativity of a new outfit every day? The shock of not spending any money on clothes for a whole month? (please note, you set your own budget, $0 is not obligatory.) The fear of having their faces plastered on a blog? Mmmmm.....

Hopefully there will be a challenger in June, because May is kicking off and so far no-one is interested in joining me in my crusade.

The Royal Wedding

I should have gone to the bookies on this one. Just yesterday, I thought to myself...."I wonder what Kate will be wearing on their wedding day". In my mind, I designed a dress with a tight bodice, conservative full skirt, small train and lace covering the arms and the bodice of the dress - with a V-neck. And what did England's future Queen decide to wear on her wedding day? Pretty much exactly that. It was probably not such a fantastic celebration that I got it right, because if you saw what her style is and what she loves to wear, it was pretty easy to guess and guess good. (what can I say, the woman loves her some V-necks)

I thought Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (as she will now be known), looked absolutely fantastic. She looked stylish, elegant...almost Royal, which I guess is the look she was going for. Her dress reminded me of another commoner who married a Prince...Princess Grace Kelly. She too looked amazing on her wedding days in a very romantic, yet structured and stylish dress.

After all the hoopla over the dress, I can say that Catherine wore a dress fit for a Queen (or in her case, a future Queen).

Day 81 - Outfit 81

This outfit isn't very clear on the photo. I'm wearing a black and navy tunic with some black blinkies, leggings, black sweater and black ballet flats. (not exactly a wedding outfit)

Blogger alert: The Glamourai

The Glamourai is one of my favourite fashion bloggers, not only because I love her outfits and cool fashion sense, but also because all the photos that she posts looks almost like it could have been in a magazine - just fabulous.

I was introduced to The Glamourai by my friend Christina, and then a few weeks later, I saw her on The Nate Berkus Show - she doesn't only have a fab fashion sense - her talents stretch to jewellery design and she helped a lady turn a drab personality-less room into a fabulous living space.  (I later realized that I had in fact seen her months earlier on the Nate Berkus show too).

I think you might like her blog too:

Trend: Bangles

This season, a huge trend is Bangles. Wear one on its own or a few together to create a great look. Whether they are wood, plastic, gold, silver, expensive, cheaper costume jewellery, the look is just fabulous.

Below are a few of my favourites:

Big bulky and silver, what's not to love

Bronze patterned - looks great mixed with bright colours or wood

Over-the-top costume blingy

Great look with gold
Gotto love bangles!

The Jean issue - part II

I was just rambling on about jeans yesterday and then this morning, I spotted the article below on yahoo.com.

Seriously, a body scanner to show you what size pants you wear at which shop? I find that all a bit odd. How about Vanity sizing??? Really? There you have it, that is why it is so difficult to buy pants/jeans on the internet. Clothing sizing is not a science...it's a joke.

The article also mentions Curve ID jeans and I've seen, read and heard many great things about this new range of Levi's jeans, so I have mentioned it before on this blog and promised to check it out. I've not yet done so, and I promise, I'll do it very soon, but I am happy to report that a friend of mine, who is tall and slim with a perky booty, has given it 2 thumbs up. She says that it is the first pair of jeans that doesn't give her "builder-butt", so yay, I think we like Curve ID jeans already. The jeans are made for 3 different types of curves, so someone with my round-behind-edness, should be in jean heaven. This has inspired me, to go try on some Curve ID jeans this weekend. (I will have to refrain from buying though, since I've already blown my budget this month).

Day 78 - Outfit 78

Funky chicken, difficult to see the details on my grey and navy Vera Wang sweater, but I quite like the little detail on it. I'm wearing it with boyfriend jeans and tall boots.

The jean issue

I was thinking about the whole "jeans issue" this weekend and I really do think that finding a pair of jeans that fit well, is a bit of an issue.

For a few years in London, I almost never wore jeans. My friend Madelein would giggle and ask why I didn't wear jeans but I, unlike every other sane person in the world, I found jeans to be extremely uncomfortable, so that was always my excuse. It was not for lack of trying. I would go to Selfridges and other posh shops and try on tons of jeans, but none of the pricey brands ever fit me well. They were either to low, too tight by the but, to loose by the waist, to tight by the legs, too whatever, so I gave up trying.

A few years later, on a bargainista shopping expedition in Primark (a very cheap shop in the United Kingdom), I stumbled to the dressing room with arms-full of clothes, and on the way, I decided to just grab a pair of jeans, afterall, I was going to try on for a while and what damage can a pair of ill-fitting jeans do.

Shockingly enough, these cheap jeans fit like they were made for me. I could not believe it, so I grabbed 2 pairs (each in a different wash) and made a bee-line for the register. That was the end of my jean dry-spell. Since then I've had luck at Calvin Klein, DKNY and Tommy Hilfiger, but no matter how many designer jean brands like Rock & Republic and True Religion I try, I just can't find a single cut that works with my very round booty. Which, I guess is not such a bad thing, because I am saving loads of $$$ by buying cheaper more flattering brands.

Now, looking back, I can't believe that I was jean-less for about 3 years. How did I cope? If you told me now that I couldn't wear jeans anymore, I'd be screwed, because I practically live in my jeans now. It just goes to show, when you go to buy jeans, don't just go for a name, because no jeans look good on everyone. You have to just try, try and try again, until you find that perfect brand that works for you. It's hard work, but so worth it in the end.

$100 gift card

I received a $100 Visa Gift voucher a few months ago that I had not yet used. I kind of decided to use it  as a back-up, in case there was a month when I wanted to spend more money than my budget would allow, and that month has just arrived, so instead of missing out on a bargain or 2, I'm going to use it this month.

I bumped into 2 fabulous bargains that I couldn't let go, thanks to the "holidays". Usually, during all long-weekends, the shops offer some great discounts, for instance, Loft has 40% off everything today, Banana Republic has between 25-40% off and Gap also has 40% off.

I found the below today:

Blue Gap dress - $25!!!! (thanks to the fact that it is on sale plus there was another 40% off - whoohoo)

Cute military-ish jacket from Banana Republic $40 (marked down from $150 - yay!)

Day 75 - Outfit 75

New dress with a black Vera Wang sweater...unfortunately I had to wear a scarf for most of the day because it was freezing this morning - in fact, at 9:30am it is 0C (32F) and snowing.

The budget

I'm sure there are people who wonder how $200 per month can be considered a budget, but believe me, most people will be shocked when they take their credit and debit card statements at the end of the month and add up how much they spend on clothes, shoes and make-up per month. (unless you don't wear make-up, detest shopping and wear t-shirts and shorts every day)

This self-imposed SMC-365 budget of $200 per month might not sound very strict to some, but it is pretty strict for me and not only am I obviously spending a lot less money, I'm also more conscious about what I buy and what I'm willing to pay for things. If that and the fact that I'm wearing more items from my closet is all that I achieve during my Shop-my-closet 365 experience, then I'll be a happy bunny.

Day 74 - Outfit 74

New dresses - yay!

Being the bargainista that I am, I answered the call of the sale at Kohls when I heard it, by using my coupon on top of the already marked-down prices and I managed to buy the 2 dresses below for $50 (original prices $60 each). Bargain? I think so. Unfortunately it is pushing me over my monthly budget by $25, but I am not going to fret it, because I will just subtract it from next month's budget.

I bought both pieces from the Lauren Conrad line at Kohls online and they arrived today. After trying them on, I decided to keep both. Let me know if you like them.

Come on warmer days, I'm so looking forward to wearing all my great new dresses!

Day 73 - Outfit 73

When all else fails, go preppy with a crisp white Tommy Hilfiger shirt, navy polka dot Tommy Hilfiger sweater, jeans, silver flats and my new little accessory, Lilu the poser.

In the words of Marli, the first brave soul to complete the Mini Challenge

Shop my closet 365 mini challenge: March

When I signed up for the month-long challenge to wear a different outfit every day, I thought it would be a breeze. I have closets full of beautiful clothes and while I also fall into the trap of wearing favourites over and over again, I generally try to give every beloved item a turn now and then.
The no-spending part of the challenge didn’t scare me in the least. In 2009 I went six months without spending one cent on any clothing, accessories or make-up – nothing!

So there I was, mid-March (the height of summer in Cape Town) going full steam with my mini-challenge, wearing a different little summery dress every day, not buying a thing. Like Liezl, I really do find dressing easier in the summer. I love dresses, always have, and it’s just too easy to drop a simple, a feminine, a sexy or a serious dress over my head, put on shoes and I’m done!

Then, slap-bang in the middle of my Shopmycloset mini-challenge, my biggest shopping excitement and challenge downfall landed straight in my lap: a ten day trip to London! The whole reason my previous shopping hiatus lasted six months and not a year, as intended, was a trip to Europe.
I cannot resist shopping, and shopping A LOT, when I find myself in foreign countries! The trends are a season ahead in the Northern hemisphere, I can shop at the Meccas of affordability (Primark, H&M and Zara are my top-temptations) AND be sure that no-one else will be wearing the same things… It’s just too much for a girl to resist.

So to add to my outfit challenge, and no-shopping challenge I now also faced a packing challenge and a change of season challenge! I had to go from dresses and flip-flops to chilly spring in Europe within 12 hours. I wanted to pack super light, as I always end up wearing the same favourites over and over, and besides, lighter luggage means more space for new purchases! Yes it’s true, I wasn’t even going to attempt not shopping, and I mailed Liezl to let her know, I’d been defeated.

Once in London I was spending a lot of time on my own, just me and the shops, just the way I like it, so a couple of days flew by without me taking my daily outfit picture! Another failure, but I solemnly swear that I didn’t once repeat an outfit from head to toe. They do all look very similar to me in the end, as I’d only taken one pair of flat boots and two outerwear items (a knit coat and a leather-look jacket). It was so chilly that I was inevitably wearing one or the other at all times!

So what did I learn from my March mini challenge?
  • Summer dressing IS easier: I think I have enough summer dresses to wear a different one each day for months!
  • It’s too easy to wear your favourites all the time: giving another option a chance helps you make the most of your wardrobe and potentially shop less.
  • Packing as light as possible is completely worth it: I shopped to my hearts’ content without worrying about weight allowances and I never missed one item I didn’t pack.
  • If you’re going on a shopping holiday: pack the day before, and on travel day, remove five more items. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to wear new purchases straight away so you need less of your ‘old’ wardrobe.
  • A spending ban heightens my awareness of value: When I ‘m not meant to be shopping, I really have to need and/or love something to allow it.
  • I recall at least two occasions before my trip where I momentarily forgot about the challenge and almost bought something cheap and cheerful.
  • The one was a cute winter dress in a synthetic fabric. Looking back, I really won’t miss that dress in my wardrobe and the sweaty fabric would probably have meant me hardly ever wearing it. Maybe I should always shop as if I’m mid-challenge!

Once again - this photo looked better in real life. I'm going to have to have a talk with my one legged photographer. Black sweater, jean shirt dress, leggings and blinky flats

Trend: Bold colours

I have blogged about some of the Spring 2011 trends that I love like Cobalt Blue and bold prints, but another trend that I'm really loving this year, is a mixture of 2 bold colours together. Basically, instead of always teaming up red a neutral colour like white or shocking pink and black, its kinda cool to team up shocking yellow top and bright green pants. (and sometimes they throw in red shoes just for that extra kick - the third colour might be a bit too much for me...)

This is such a bold and flashy thing to do and when I first saw it, I though "mmmmm....", but the more I see it, the more I love it. I have an outfit in mind that I'll wear in a few weeks time that would work. It is a bright pink cardi that I'm planning on wearing with my purple maxi dress. Is it bold? Yes. Am I uncomfortable with it? No. I'm actually looking forward to it.

I saw Haley on American Idol tonight and she was rocking this new trend, so I felt obliged to write about it and post some pics of this fabulousness. My thoughts on this trend are, if you don't feel bold enough to wear such bold different colours on the top and bottom, try some baby steps. For instance, try a bright coloured dress and shoes in another bright colour and wear them together. It's a great look.

This season, Diane von Furstenburg really was rocking this look on her runway and advertisements. Below are a few looks (mostly DVF).

Shoesies for my footsies

I've done it, I've bought some shoes. Not the ones I wanted, but I've decided the only way to find the ones I really wanted, was to give up the search, so I hereby surrender. I give up. I have bought some 6th choice shoes to stop the obsession.

I went to a shoe shop, found the cool but cheaper ones that were pretty close to the ones I wanted, but they were so high that I could not imagine wearing them to work. If I took one step wrong with them, it would mean some serious leg braking, muscle pulling injuries - something I really can't afford at the moment.

So, I went for my second choice. They looked fab on, but within a few seconds, my feet felt slightly clammy (and no, I don't normally have very sweaty feet). I then realized that I had forgotten to look for one little word - so small, but so important for my oh-so-sensitive little feet: Leather.

Third choice was sold out in my colour.

Fourth choice was sold out in my number.

Fifth choice looked cheap.

Finally, I went for my sixth choice. I thought about it and realized that I would be wearing these shoes mostly for work, so they had to be a little bit more sensible than I thought at first.

Below are some pics - what do you think?:

They are not bad, they are leather and they are very wearable, so...if there isn't any objection, I might just keep them (please let me know quickly, because if they need to go back, it has to happen in the next 30 days).

From crap to fab in 1 day

Yesterday I was not able to even think clear concise thoughts, nevermind write something that made any sense/was interesting/legible thanks to a night out and copious amounts of white wine.

Today on the other hand, I feel great. Not only because I am hangover-free, but also because the weather was better today (around 20 C) whoohoo and I decided to wear my new Maxi-dress from Forever 21 and it felt great. Not only because it is a warmer weather outfit, but because I received 4 compliments from strangers about my outfit. One woman said she loved the dress, then her colleague said about 30 minutes later that she loved it too. Later a shop assistant told me my outfit is "cute" and then as a woman walked past me on the street, she said: "you look so pretty in this outfit"...I mean really, who wouldn't feel great after that.

It goes to show, when you wear something you feel good in, you actually look better in it and people will notice. Yay great weather! Yay fun outfit! Yay and thank you strangers! They just made my day.

Matthew Williamson @ Macy's

I used to love the "Designers at Debenhams" range by designers like Matthew Williamson, Jasper Conran and Ben de Lisi. Basically, this was the start of a more "main stream" affordability of designer wear and I definitely made use of it when I lived in London.

Now, I'm very excited about a new discovery that I have made...Matthew Williamson is available here in the USA at Macy's and the range is fabulous, bold, colourful and delicious. (oh, and let's not forget...AFFORDABLE - whooohoo).

Below is a link to the website. Unfortunately the background is making it really difficult to see the outfits, so you can't really see all the fabulous colours, but I saw it in the shop, and it is fabulous!

Spring Snow!!

This morning when I woke up, the world outside was white...and no, I didn't appreciate it much. I've had enough of the cold weather BS and I'm ready for a definite rise in temperatures. Driving to work in 32 F (0C), is not supposed to be normal in Spring, is it? Well, when you live in Colorado, it is.

Not only do I not enjoy the cold in general, but this has been a very long winter and I'm running out of wardrobe ideas. I've promised myself that I would wear a different outfit every day and post the pic (which I'm doing), but  I'm not at my "majority-of-my-closet-weight" yet, so finding something interesting and new to wear (that fits) in this sucky weather, is proving to be quite the challenge.

The other thing that makes me dislike the weather even more, is the fact that I have loads of cute warmer weather outfits that are hanging in my closet, just begging to be warn. I'm already creating little outfit combinations in my head (I wonder how many other people do that?) and I'm liking what I'm "seeing" but would prefer to rather wear it in real life than on my imaginary dress-form.

This whole "1-new-outfit-a-day" thing would have been much easier had my husband not crushed his leg and smashed his knee, because our long period of house-bound-ness is keeping me out of some nice "dressy" going-out outfits that would have, on the odd occasion, taken the place of my everyday work-wear. So instead of throwing in a stylish little number every now and then, I'm just dressing for the office (our office is EXTREMELY casual, by the way, in case you haven't noticed)

Sorry if I seem a bore with my constant complaining about the weather, but its cramping my style, and a girl's gotto do what a girl's gotto do and on this occasion its complain. Soon...

Trend: Cut-outs

This year "cut-outs" are a hugely popular trend in shoes and fashion. From strategically cut-out evening gowns and tops to sexy shoes.

That is what I am concentrating today - fabulous shoes. I've seen a few I like/love:

From Nordstrom, Enzo Angionlini:

DSW has a similar pair that I think is quite lovely too:

Valentino's on Net-a-porter:

Enzo Angiolini at Piperlime:

Prada at Saks Fifth Avenue:

Stuart Weitzman at Neiman Marcus:

Oh I just love these cut-outs. They are perfect for summer and just fun fun fun!

Derek Lam & Ebay

I’m loving me some Derek Lam and just thought I should share this little gem with everyone.

He is such an  awesome designer and I just love his use of fabulously girly prints and whimsy fabric. I thought his NY Fashion week Spring 2011 collection was just amazing. There are so many pieces that I want – especially the blue and white maxi dress. Love!

http://dereklam.com/shop/category/all/satin-stripe-chiffon-halter-dress-with-sea-snake-trim-3.html

Derek Lam is putting a few dresses on ebay.com and the sale starts on May 10th,
but you can get a sneak preview. The prices are very affordable (actually, its pretty much a steal for a Derek Lam dress) and if I didn’t have that pesky $200 per month budget thing going on, I would have SO bought a dress or 2 on ebay, but unfortunately, I’m going to have to be a good girl and
stick to my budget. (unless I have some money over from this month…I promise
nothing).

Fun Forever 21 dress that creates the illusion of a waist for me (yay!), worn with cashmere cardi, black stockings and black tall boots.

Loving Net-a-porter.com

For those of you who love fashion, here is a secret that I just have to share
with you...Net-a-porter.com. Seriously.

Each morning I wake up with some fabulously inspirational outfit/s that they
posted on Facebook and it just makes me happy.  Isn’t that what clothing and
fashion is supposed to do? Shouldn’t you feel inspired by something beautiful
and shouldn’t a great outfit make you feel fabulous?

As I have mentioned before, this blog is not about me trying to prove to the
world that I am a fashionista, because I’m not, but I do love clothes and shoes
and dressing up makes me feel good. In fact, I’m trying to get back to the girl
who didn’t care if she was the only one in a flashy outfit and heals at an
event; the girl who don’t buy shoes because they are comfortable, but because
they are fabulous! and the girl who wants to dress like me, not everyone around
me.

 http://www.facebook.com/netaporter

This website inspires me every day, so if you are not yet a facebook fan, go
ahead…take the big step…you’ll love it.
Day 63 - Outfit 63

Mixing a fun summery tunic/dress with a BCBG sweater, skinny's and gold ballet flats. (bit of a boring pose which doesn't bring the outfit to justice. Note to self: find a pose that suites the look, not cover it up like a granny...)

The freaking shoes

After hours of online search, I finally narrowed my search down to 3 pairs...I was ecstatic. But only 2 minutes later, I was talked out of buying shoes online because "you have to try shoes on" - and not even the promise of "free returns" could convince my husband otherwise.

Now back to the drawing board. Back to square one. Back to many months ago...only difference is that I am now not only disappointed, but also frustrated.

I am asking myself: "Am I too picky?" "Am I too full of crap?" "Am I looking for the perfect shoe that does not exist in my price range?" (I know it exists in the $800+ price range, which is NOT my price range)

Maybe I should listen to all these "Am I's?" and just stop all the madness and the obsession. I'm walking around and I'm seeing fantastic shoes in bright colours and nudes (that won't go with any of the outfits that my obsession is meant to go with), but I stop, pick them up, ooh and aah and realize that they are NOT what I'm looking for, so I walk on and finally leave empty handed. Just to start the search all over next time.

Maybe, just maybe, I'm jinxing myself. Could it be that I can't find the perfect pair because I am LOOKING for it?

Perhaps I should go into a shop, buy another pair of shoes that I'm cooing over (and that I know actually exits) and then, I might just let go of the extreme obsession and on an unsuspecting day "bump" into the perfect pair of black, high heeled (with a small platform) shoe-booties/cage-shoes. A girl can dream...

Day 62 - Outfit 62

All hope of warm weather disappeared this morning when I woke up to a snow covered deck/yard/roof. Black sweater, jeans and blinky black flats. Brrrrr.

Saturday, April 9, 2011

Cheap shopping - yeah!

I did a bit of shopping today...I'm a bit hesitant to post any of it on here, because it kinda looks a bit boring now, hanging against the door...it looked much better on...I promise! And at prices like these, who could say no??? - 4 items...$55 - bargainista galore!. That now bring my total left for the month to: $65.

Khaki shirt dress

Bright sundress

Denim shirt dress (I was thinking: "hey, this would look cute with some white leggings"...just one problem...I don't own any - I can feel another expedition coming on...soon)

Teal sundress

Day 61 - Outfit 61

White cardi, pink top, jeans and Choos...I was a bit brave when I put this outfit on today...It was definitely not warm enough. (note to self...just because you are wearing Spring-y outfits, does not mean the weather will play along...you can get the temperature from your cell phone for a reason.)

SMC Mini Challenge: Marli's week 3 & 4

Marli's SMC365-Mini-Challenge is over and below is a collage of those days. This is a very interesting collage...Marli has some summer outfits, a few winter ones and even a photo-shoot outfit in the mix. Once again, she doesn't disappoint when it comes to interesting, fun, colourful and vibey outfits. I just love her style.

One thing I have learnt about Marli during this Mini Challenge of hers, is that just like me, she attaches a lot of memories to her clothes. In fact, she can basically tell you where she bought almost everything and each item has a little tale to it. She though she was alone, but no my dear, I'm right there with you!

Day 60 - Outfit 60

Today was about 18 degrees C and I just couldn't wear another wintery outfit, so I'm calling Spring/Summer with this little number. I bought this dress on a road trip with my friend Mads. We stayed in Hermanus, South Africa and at the little market we found a stall with the cutest dresses. I teamed the dress up with a little cashmere cardi and ballet flats.

Come-on Summer! (or even Spring will do - just please can the temperature go up?? - I seriously need to start wearing some more summery clothes!)

One of those days

Today is just one of those days...the inspiration to write anything interesting/informative/exciting/wise escapes me, so instead of waffling on about a whole lot of crap, I'll just post my pic for the day and get on with it.

There is always tomorrow...

Day 59 - Outfit 59

The colourfulness of the outfit almost matches the loss of inspiration...

And I've found another cheaper version

In the spirit of me calling myself  The Bargain Hunter (and sometimes the bargainista, but that's for another blog), I've found another shoe and their cheaper version on the internet.

This cute shoe from Ash called Delicious Wedge Sandal in Neutral is $200 on the Ash website

While the cheaper version, Levity's snap wedge sandal, is currently being sold at DSW for $59.95

Pretty much identical, non?

Day 58 - Outfit 58

Cream sweater, skinny's and brown tall boots. (I think Lilu approves)
